Quick Overview
Drymis Winterii (popularly known in Brazil as casca-d'anta , cataia, canelo or foigue), is much revered by the Mapuche indians in Chile as a very sacred plant to which they attribute great spiritual power and numerous medicinal properties. Its ethno-botanical uses include burning the dry leaves as a strong incense to imbue rituals with the appropriate seriousness, brewing the leaves to produce a delicious and stimulating tea that settles the stomach and warms the body on cold nights, and chewing the leaves to cleanse and purify the mouth. For use as a very special flavoring, the leaves are mixed with alcohol, and allowed to brew for two or three weeks, resulting in a highly aromatic and glowing green liquid. The leaves can also be ground to a powder and used to enhance the flavor of various foods.
