Quick Overview

This succulent - not cactus - comes from the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. Though just recently seized upon as an extremely effective appetite suppressant, this plant has been used for ages by the San Bushmen of the South African desert as a way to ease the pangs of hunger while on extended travels. (Only the gordonii species of the Hoodia genus possess these unique characteristics.)

Product Description

Hoodia gordonii has no known negative side effects – the plant’s classification in South Africa is that of a foodstuff. Its active ingredient works by mimicking the effect that glucose has on the nerve cells – making the body feel full even when it hasn’t eaten. Clinical trials of this substance continue to be more and more successful, with the latest results promising to successfully and safely reduce individual caloric intake by up to 2,000 calories per day. Experimentation has been being undertaken by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa for many years now; their efforts are now focused on isolating the molecule that is the source of this plant’s amazing appetite-suppressing ability. The rarity of this plant, and its harsh habitat, means that it is very well-protected. It is illegal even to cultivate Hoodia gordonii without a permit, let alone attempt to harvest it in the wild. Licensed cultivators are currently the only sustainable source of this plant. Generally, about a gram of the plant (A dose for an average male; this can vary considerably with body weight and from person to person, so start small.) is consumed 30 – 60 minutes before each meal, resulting in a lessening of the desire to eat, a tendency to feel full much earlier than normal, and surprisingly, no corresponding decrease in energy levels for a period of up to 24 hours. The appetite-quelling effects take place immediately for some people and take much longer for others – it can take up to several weeks to attain full results. Unexpectedly, Hoodia gordonii’s most positive effect may have nothing at all to do with suppressing the appetite; one of this plant’s most pleasurable effects is said to be the sense of general well-being that is experienced by its user.
