Quick Overview

Spirulina is a simple, one-celled form of algae which grows in warm, alkaline fresh-water bodies. The name "spirulina" comes from the Latin word for "helix" or "spiral" which refers to the physical configuration of the organism when it forms swirling, microscopic strands. Spirulina has been used to provide essential vitamins and other nutrients to the peoples of Africa and the Americas for centuries.

Product Description

This microalgae, which has been reproducing itself for over 3.5 billion years, is 60% vegetable protein, consists of a substantial amount of beta carotene, iron, vitamin B-12 and the essential fatty acid, GLA. It is literally packed with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrents. These tiny green spiral coils use the sun’s energy to produce bioavailable nutrients. Spirulina contains compounds such as phycocyanin, polysaccharides and sulfolipids which enhance the immune system.

In 1993-95, research demonstrated that natural polysaccharides in spirulina increased T-cell counts, strengthened the immune system and raised disease resistance in chickens, fish and mice. In 1994, a Russian patent was awarded for spirulina as a medicine for reducing allergic reactions from radiation in the Children of Chernobyl.

Spirulina is popularly used to increase energy, nutritional balance, weight control and cleansing. It can be taken in between or before meals as a nutritional supplement. Spirulina is also safe for children, pregnant and nursing mothers.
