Virola is widely used by the inhabitants of the tropical forests of South America, both as part of their religious and shamanistic ceremonies as well as for recreation. Virola contains psychoactive tryptamine alkaloids and beta-carbolines, which account for its pronounced hallucinogenic properties that frequently involve macropsia (a perceived exaggeration of the size of objects). Though snuffing the bark is the most common traditional way of administration, Virola has also be smoked by itself or used as an additive to tobacco.
