 Cola nitida has been used for thousands of years in Africa for its general stimulating effect and as part of various social, political, and religious ceremonies. Soldiers chewed cola nuts as an appetite and thirst suppressant, enabling them to travel long distances without food or water. Since the fourteenth century it has also been used by Islamic peoples who, according to their religion, cannot drink alcohol, but nevertheless desire a "social lubricant". In 1998, it was approved by the Commission E (renowned as the world's greatest authority on the safety and efficacy of herbs and phytomedicines) for use during conditions of mental and physical fatigue, and as a supportive treatment for depressive states and mental confusion.
